The reception included a ceremony for the www.spanish-marketing.com [Spanish Marketing, Inc.] Scholarship Program. Three students were on hand at the event to receive their $2,000 scholarships. Scholarship funding was provided by www.spanish-marketing.com [SMI], Tejas Broadcasting, Morelia Restaurants and Toro Homes. The scholarships went to Hispanic graduating high school seniors who demonstrated financial need and a passionate desire to attend college. Each of the students were selected based on academic achievement and extra-curricular involvement. Rene PenÞa, Dallas Independent School District community liaison, will follow up on the scholarship winners during quarterly visits throughout their college education. Hispanics’ access to higher education has been limited even though the Hispanic population has increased 61 percent. While 24.4 percent of the general population has college degrees, only 10.4 percent of the Hispanic population has a college degree. Contributing to this education gap is the fact that the average income for Hispanic households is $34,397.
