This rant today is about the media. I got this email on
Jay Leno's opinion.
I thought it was very in line with how I feel so I thought
I would share it.

pathetic negativity.

"The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and
came across some poll data I found rather hard to believe.

It must be true, given the source, right?The Newsweek poll
alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the
direction the country is headed, and 69 percent of the country
is unhappy with the performance of the President In essence,
2/3's of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.So being
the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ''What are we so
unhappy about?''
Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day,
7 days a week?
Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the
summer and heating in the winter?
Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?
Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time,
and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic
Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move
through each state?
Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find
along the way that can provide temporary shelter?
I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from
around the world is just not good enough.
Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show
up andProvide services to help all, and even send a helicopter to take
you to the hospital.
Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.
You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire,
a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch
equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and
your belongings.
Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a
burglar or prowler intrudes , an officer equipped with a gun and a
bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack
or loss.
This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias
raping and pillaging the residents.
Neighborhoods where 90 percent of teenagers own cell phones and
computers.
How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we
enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?
Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.Fact is, we
are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever
seen.
No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its
citizens.
They see us for what we are.

The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain
about what we don't have , and what we hate about the country
instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.
I know, I know.
What about the President who took us into war and has no plan to
get us out?
The President who has a measly 31 percent approval rating?
Is this the same President who guided the nation in the dark days
after 9/11?
The President that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession?
Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in
the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats
safe from terrorist attacks?

The Commander-In Chief of an all-volunteer army that is out
there defending you and me?
Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show?

Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you
couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good
things and be glad?

Think about it...are you upset at the President because he actually
caused you personal pain OR is it because the "Media" told you he
was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan
have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died
for your freedom.
There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go.

They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general''
discharge, an ''other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case
scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69
percent of Americans?

Say what you want, but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds,
it leads; and they specialize in bad news.

Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts.
How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner?

The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit
corporations.
They offer what sells , and when criticized, try to defend
their actions by "justifying" them in one way or another.

Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson
to write a book about "how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did
he would have done it this way"...Insane!

Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media.
Shut off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times
for the bottom of your bird cage.
Then start being grateful for all we have as a country.
There is exponentially more good than bad.
We are among the most blessed people on Earth, and should
thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and
appreciative.
"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides,
flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one
end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks,
"Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of
Allegiance?"

$10 per click - do they know something we don't?

“ Xenical ”By Neal LebarI have utilized pay-per-click
(PPC) advertising since itsinception about two years ago.

With PPC, the advertiser isonly charged when a person
actually clicks on their link.The amount you actually
pay for each click is referred toas the cost-per-click
(CPC). I've got to admit, I was pretty leery at first.

But since then I've watched the price of certain search
engine keywords skyrocket in excessof $10 per click!

The big question isn't how much it costsper click but
how many clicks does it take to get anacquisition.
I've often asked myself, why would so many companies
pay that much money for one single, measly, push of
the index finger?
The answer is simple - it just works!

HOW TO JUSTIFY $10 PER CLICK The advent of
PPC advertising has changed Internet marketing forever.
It represents a free market in much the same way as
eBay -- controlled by a natural supply and demand
relationship. For a keyword phrase such as "debt
consolidation," the top five advertisers are willing to
paycost-per-click charges of $10.01, $10, $9.99, $7,
and$6.97.
My first reaction was, something has to be wrong with
this picture - it just can't be! So I looked at the
"life insurance" phrase, where the top five range from
$7 to $3.50.
Then there are drugs like "Xenical" that range from
$6.76 to $6.74. There are many more examples where
the cost-per-click exceeds $6, $7, or $10,but you get
the point.
The fact of the matter is that while PPC advertising can
work quite well - it can also be a flat out failure. When
companies are willing to pay more than $5 per click, you
can be pretty certain that they have figured out how
to make it work - otherwise they wouldn't pay those
prices.
THE SELECT FEW I have seen many situations where
PPC will work for one company but not for another in
the same industry, using the same keywords. Large
and small companies will venture in,bid for a week or
two, and then drop out -- never to be heard from again.

Some will come in, drive the prices way up then drop
back out to obscurity. The select few who are successful
have found the secret -- a combination of patience,
determination, creativity, keyword selection,management
and analysis.
They do the math, every day -they manage the
bids, every day - they look for new keywords, every day
- they analyze the results, every day.It takes a great deal
of work to figure out how to make PPC advertising deliver
results, and the ones who have are nowbenefiting -
every day.
WHAT IS THE COST OF AN ACQUISITION? In order
to determine if your PPC advertising is justified,the
first thing you need to understand is your current
acquisition cost - what does it now cost to acquire a
newcustomer or order?
It's amazing how few companies know what their cost
of acquisition is. To keep it simple, take your total
advertising expenditures and divide it by the number of
new acquisitions (orders or customers), that should give
you a rough estimate of your cost per acquisition.

Similarly, after running a PPC campaign for a month,
you take the total advertising expenditures divided by
the number of acquisitions. Of course, these raw numbers
are not burdened by administrative costs, but they still
provide an apples-versus-apples comparison.

I have managed PPC campaigns where the averagecost
-per-click was $0.40 and others where it was $5.The key
question remains: how many clicks does it take to get an
acquisition?
If the cost for each click is $0.40and it takes 200 clicks
for an acquisition, then the acquisition cost is $80.
If the cost for each click is$5 and it takes 10 clicks,
the cost of the acquisitionis $50.FINDING THE GAPS

Two key points are crucial:
(1) how much does it cost toget an Internet acquisition
compared to traditionalmethods? and
(2) what is the value of a new customer?

In some businesses a new customer is worth $1,000,
while inothers, only $10. Typically, the cost-per-click
reflects this value, but since the market is still very
small, there are significant gaps. Remember the
"debt consolidation"keyword phrase above?

The difference between the first and last cost-per-click
was about 30%. On the other hand,there is literally no
difference between cost-per-click rates for the keyword
"Xenical".
From this you may conclude that there is a lot more
competition for "Xenical"then there is for "debt
consolidation".
The opportunity is between the gaps in the 30%
differential example.The bidding market for keywords
is still so new and untapped that it's rare to have more
than three competitors fighting over a specific phrase.
The gaps in key word cost-per-click charges such as
"debt consolidation" are the norm and represent
tremendous opportunities still available in this media.

Right now they are plentiful, and for those few people
who take the time to understand this important marketing
tool, the time to act is NOW!

Recently a subscriber asked me about how she could continue
to publish articles on her website if there weren’t enough
topics to write about.

Here’s her question:

However, I cannot come up with enough topics to sell my
product. There just aren't that many things to write about."

And here’s my answer:

When you started Internet Marketing, you were probably
told to be specific about your target market and define
whom you’re marketing to. That was great advice. If you
sell a product, you want to market it to a specific target
market.
Let’s say you sell a product that shows parents how to potty
train their child. Your target market for your product is
parents of toddlers who are trying to potty train their child.

You can help promote your product by publishing potty
training articles to draw in highly-targeted prospects for
your highly-targeted product.

But there’s a problem - that’s a very narrow window to
grasp the right prospect for your product. You have to
reach them right when they are ready to potty train their
child and convince them to buy your product.

Why limit yourself like this?
Article marketing is an inexpensive venture and can
dramatically increase your pool of leads. It can even
help you increase your bottom line by adding new streams
of income.
If you sell a potty training product and you want to market
with content – go WIDER.
For the purposes of article marketing, you have the wider
market of parents and there is NO shortage of article topics
to reach parents.

Basic Selling 101

Most internet businesses do not realize that the basics
of selling are born within everyone. They are primal,
like hunting, defending, and survival instincts.

This includes selling to people on the web.
“ This is the style you want to buy, right? ”Many
home based businesses believe that if they ‘build it
they will come.’
Instead, the ‘pack’ moves on, leaving the business
owner wondering how the billions of web surfers can
all miss their website.It isn’t that the business doesn’t
have a good website, or that the ad copy is poor, or
that the SEO is out of date, if the website is not designed
to sell, then people will not realize they are suppose to
buy something.

I saw a great example a week ago. A teen boy, very good
looking, wandered around the mall where I shopped, looking
for a perfect pair of jeans. He went into one store where
two young girls gushed over him, and did everything asked.

What a perfect lesson in marketing.

Rule #1: Focus on the client.

Neither of these girls wasted a moment telling my son
how great the product was. They didn’t worry about
benefits or price. They did one thing, made him feel
comfortable.

Rule #2: Solve a problem.

This young man spent several hundred dollars before
I wandered away. The jeans in this store were the same
quality and price as the other stores carried. However,
he was a shy buyer. Or, maybe it wasn’t cool to stand
on a chair and flip through the jeans hanging on the wall
display.The young girls did this for him – they solved
his problem.

Rule #3: Don’t focus on the sale.

These girls never focused on the sale. They never threw
product at him. They talked to him, entertained him,
and made life easier for him. He felt good in the store.
Part of his shopping experience was to be entertained,
so, without understanding the basic marketing principals,
these girls did a world-class job of selling the store’s
product.

Rule #4 They did not oversell, or over promise.

The retail world is shark infested waters that over
promises and under delivers without ever feeling they
are acting immorally. People have come to believe they
are being lied to when they read testimonials, ad copy,
or promises. These two girls promised nothing, and
made few suggestions. Instead, they asked questions.
The customer’s answers created the focus for the ‘sale’
– not the store’s policy.

Rule #5 Meet an emotional need.

There are three needs, escapism, entertainment,
excitement that lead to a sale. These two women
let the young man escape the reality of his life for a
few moments.
There is no doubt that he was entertained, and the
thrill of being treated like one of the men in a music
video would have been exciting. Without a BS in
business marketing, or even a course in selling,
these two women did a better job than most CEOs
could have.

Rule #6 Ask them to buy.

One of the girls held up a pair of baggy pants and
said, “This is the style you want to buy, right?”
She didn’t ask him if he wanted to buy. She didn’t
tell him that she thought he should buy this
particular pair of pants. She affirmed that she
understood his needs, and used the information
he offered to find the perfect pair of pants for him.

This is the number one, over looked, selling mistake
on the internet. Most websites do not worry about the
customer. They have a single product for the buyer,
take it or leave it. Simply letting the buyer fill out a
questionnaire, or poll, or even using an e-course,
puts the power in the buyer’s hands.

Their answers direct them to a buy-now page with
a product that will solve their needs, and ad copy
written especially for them.

make the same mistakes in direct-response copy and
advertising.

You can avoid the most common and costly
blunders by following these proven tips...

1. WRITE IN DIRECT-RESPONSE LANGUAGE:
Use short paragraphs and short words. This article
has 68% short words-five letters or less. Strive for
at least 65%-75%. Never go under 50% unless you
are writing to Ph.D's.Make your sentences and
paragraphs flow like a breeze.

Ignore good grammar when you have a good reason.
Keep the bucket brigade going: Start paragraphs with
And, But, So you see, However...Use the freshest
concepts and the most colorful language you can
without disturbing the flow.

Use hot words: free, profit, new, now, secret, easy,
save, guarantee, today... and the hottest word of all:
YOU!

Use bullets... lots of them.

2. WRITE LOTS OF HEADLINES.

Always think up dozens of alternative headlines.
Put your strongest benefits in them and test your
best alternatives. When writing headlines for web
sites make sure they include key search words and
phrases along with the benefits.

3. DROP THE WARM-UPS...
You'll destroy your entire letter/ad by starting off,

Take your first draft and try cutting out the first
two to three paragraphs... you'll usually find the real
"meat" starts to appear in your copy after you have
started to "warm-up" to the writing.

4. STAND OUT.
Separate yourself from the competition as clearly as
you can. Discover, isolate, and dramatize all the reasons
for doing business wity you...today..., instead of your
competitor.
Build your entire package or ad around these reasons
(benefits).

5. SELL BENEFITS, NOT FEATURES.
Readers don't buy products or features of products.
They buy the benefits-of-use of the product or features.
Be humble enough to realize that a buyer will not give
you one red cent for any product or feature until you
convert the features into benefits-of-use.

6. LEARN TO GIVE.
Most advertisers and charities think of direct response
strictly as a device to "get". Unfortunately, most readers
also want to get. So, to succeed, you must adopt a "give"
attitude... beyond what you offer in the product or service.

Give them something immediately in your ad, your letter,
your web page. Give them news, business tips, interesting
stories, resources, freebies, special deals.

7. USE TESTIMONIALS.They're proof that you're as
good as you say you are, and that you'll do what you
say will do.
Like..."I increased profits by $100,000 last year using
your services..." Joe Smith, President, Smith Corporation
The more specific the testimonial the more power it has.
Give full attributions whenever possible.

Testimonials give you believability and credibility.
You can't do successful direct-response without these
two essential factors.

8. OFFER A MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE.
Whatever you are selling, make sure you offer a money-
back guarantee. It's a critical factor in getting someone
to send in their monty to someone they don't know or
maybe never heard of.

9. CREDIT CARDS, TOLL FREE NUMBERS.Credit
card purchases and toll-free "800" numbers can increase
your response by as much as 50% to 400%.
If you're on the web make sure you opt for secure on-line
transmission (SSL) of credit card orders... or allow other
means for your customer to provide their credit
information to you.

10. ASK FOR ACTION.
It's amazing how often otherwise good copy never gets
around to asking for the order. If you don't ask for action...
you won't get any.

11. BUDGET YOUR TIME.
Devote about one third of your writing time to the lead
elements, headline, subheads, teasers, opening paragraphs.

12. KEEP CURRENT.
Direct-response is more scientific than other types of

3 Tips To Profit From Newsletters Without Writing Them Yourself
I'm sure you have heard many online marketers touting the benefits
of having a newsletter.

I have used newsletters in the past for many sites.
I've used them as a source of revenue by having advertisements
embedded within the newsletter content. They are also effective as a
means to keep a site sticky - to "anchor" clients and bring them back t
o the site.

Newsletters can also be a great selling tool to provide free information,
samples of your expertise or services, and as a taste of your full
product/service. The lure of free content from newsletters can
help you to turn casual surfers to potential customers and then finally
paying customers.

“ Dear clientname ”
I find the biggest problem for me personally is to consistently provide
new content (which is strange since I have no problems writing a daily
blog, go figure!). Consequently I have looked for methods to get around this
problem.
Many of the sites I control I enjoy for the business management side
of things and don't actually provide the core services myself. For
example at BetterEdit.com I don't do any of the editing. I have
professionals on staff that handle that aspect of the business.

Consequently I have found it difficult to write newsletters that appeal
to my target audience. Other times I've just grown bored of the subject
matter and it becomes a chore to write a newsletter. If you don't have
enthusiasm your output is not going to be very good.Over the years
I've developed ways to make money from newsletters without writing
them myself.

1. Hire WritersThe first and most obvious way is to hire people to do it
for you. I did it this way for a community site I built with over 1000 members.
In this case it was quite easy to find people that had experience and enthusiasm
for the subject matter;
I posted a news announcement looking for newsletter writers.
I hired two people and paid cash on a per newsletter basis though at one
point my writers were happy to write for free, they just enjoyed contributing
to the community (though I made sure to pay them whenever there was
advertiser revenue).
To make a profit I just made sure I had more revenue from advertisers than
I had to pay my writers. A simple equation but one that takes time to balance
since you need an audience, advertisers and writers. If you have a popular site
(the audience) the other two variables should come easily.

Alternatively you could try searching for a freelancer to write for you.

2. Other People’s ContentAnother method that I've utilised is to put
together a summary style newsletter that simply links to content online.
You take the time to find the quality articles and links for your members
but you don't have to actually do any writing yourself. IncWire is a good
example of a newsletter like this. It provides links to great entrepreneurship
articles that have been drawn from all over the net.

The newsletter is free and sponsored by advertisers. Of course you can
also make use of article repositories such as EzineArticles.com and simply
use other people's articles in your newsletter. This is a reliable and easy
option since there is no shortage of great articles available for free publication
everyday.

3. E-CourseYou can also try an e-course style newsletter. This is a bit
different to a traditional newsletter. Your visitors sign up and then over a
period of time intervals they get sent the course via email. You can use
plain text emails (this is the best method in my opinion - keep it simple
stupid - kiss!), or HTML email or Adobe PDFs.

You can send them out once a day for the next seven days or once a
month for a year. It's up to you but generally the sooner the better
because you want to continually build up interest over a short period
of time. Will Swayne at Marketing-Results.com.au recommends a
consecutive seven day e-course. While initially you do have to write
the content yourself once it's written your done. You don't have to
constantly provide new content and your course can be sent out to
unlimited subscribers.

The benefit of an e-course is that you can really focus on what your
speciality is. Your course acts as a showpiece for your core competency,
your skills, and allows people to try before they buy. You can monetise
the course by inserting affiliate links, advertisements or selling your own
services/products (or all three!).

Newsletter SoftwareYou might be thinking this is all well and good,
but how do I manage my newsletter. How do I handle an e-course
being sent out every day for seven days to hundreds of different
people without being blocked by SPAM blockers. What technology
is available and what do I recommend.
Personally I use Marketer's Choice to handle all email communications
but if you just want a newsletter service it's definitely way too expensive
- it's more of an all-in-one marketing tool. I've tried a few different
newsletter software packages.

Some you install on to your own server and then manage online,
others that are externally hosted subscriber based services and one
that functioned a lot like an email client that sits on your desktop and
sends out emails through your mail server. All of these have pros and
cons. Of course it depends on your budget, but as I have stated you often
get what you pay for so be wary of the free packages out there.

I recommend you try my favourite script source, The PHP Resource Index (http://php.resourceindex.com), in particular the Mailing List category
should be your first port of call. You can try good old Google search as well.
Anti-SPAMBefore you commit to any newsletter software make sure you
check how they deal with SPAM. Do they have an official policy and
description of how your newsletters will be received? Are they just mass
broadcast?

Your newsletter software should provide double-opt in protection which
means your subscribers have to opt-in and confirm their subscription via
email before they receive anything. This helps to keep you from being
accused of spamming. One of the main reasons I chose Marketer's Choice
was because they have a very good system to make sure your mail is delivered
to your subscribers. They have an in-built SPAM checker which reviews email
you send out and tells you the likelihood your mail will be blocked by anti-SPAM
software. It has the capability to personalise every email that is sent out so it
appears with "Dear clientname" rather than just a generic "hello".

This is an important feature both as a sales tool (people tend to read emails
that start with their name) and it's more likely that your mail won't be classed
as SPAM by anti-SPAM software, which flag non-personalised email as potential
SPAM. It's the extra benefits that professional services provide that make them
worth the cost, but you do have to go out there and test to find what suits your needs.Newsletters Are Ace!

Really I can't think of many reasons not to have some form of newsletter
or e-course on your site. Yes it does take time to set things up but it's worth
the effort. I suggest you write it in your to-do list now if you don't have a
newsletter already!
