Orchestras are tough.

One cause is that we’re actually good at noticing once they’re out of tune. Only a tiny bit off modifications our notion of the sound.

The opposite cause is that if the performers look ahead to a frontrunner of their part to go first, each entrance and each assault will probably be muddled. You’ll want to go when it’s time to go, not wait to observe intently behind.

Coordinating our tone and our tempo creates magic, and but we frequently fail to guide, preferring to observe as a substitute.
