McDonald’s is bringing back its fried apple pie for the first time in 30 years for the U.S.’ 250th

McDonald’s is reviving its iconic fried apple pies to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, marking their return to U.S. restaurants for the first time in over 30 years. The limited-time offering will begin on June 23 and is part of a broader trend among fast-food chains to introduce unique menu items for this historic occasion.

Alongside McDonald’s, Burger King has launched its Firecracker Cookie Pie, featuring a sugar cookie crust adorned with red, white, and blue star-shaped sprinkles. Similarly, Sonic has introduced a red, white, and blue slush float priced at $2.50, and Hardee’s has released an iced Star-Spangled Biscuit topped with patriotic sprinkles.

McDonald’s first introduced its fried apple pie in 1968, coinciding with the launch of the Big Mac and a culturally tumultuous period in America. The fried version was phased out in the U.S. in 1992 in favor of a baked alternative, reflecting changing consumer preferences regarding health and nutrition. However, the fried apple pie continues to be available in certain international markets, including Mexico, Australia, and China.

In terms of nutritional content, the baked apple pie contains 230 calories, which is slightly higher than the fried version, according to the company. Enthusiasm for the return of the fried apple pie is evident, as shown by the existence of a Facebook group dedicated to its revival, boasting 130 members. To commemorate the occasion, McDonald’s will also unveil a giant 35-foot fried apple pie along Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois, which will remain on display until July 4.
