The Fraudster Behind a $100M Deli Stock Scam Is Going to Prison

James Patten, a convicted fraudster, has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for his involvement in a scheme that artificially inflated the stock value of Hometown International, the parent company of Your Hometown Deli in Paulsboro, New Jersey. Alongside co-conspirators Peter Coker Sr. and Peter Coker Jr., Patten played a key role in boosting the company’s shares by an astonishing 939%.

The fraudulent activity aimed to create a façade that would make Hometown International a desirable candidate for reverse mergers with private companies seeking public listing. However, the scheme began to unravel when hedge fund manager David Einhorn drew attention to the deli’s strange $100 million valuation in 2021, humorously suggesting that “the pastrami must be amazing.” A CNBC investigation further linked Patten’s previous convictions for fraud to this case.

Patten’s accomplices have already completed their prison sentences, which were six months and 40 months, respectively. Meanwhile, the deli, which was managed by a high school wrestling coach unaware of the illegal activities, ceased operations and stopped selling pastrami in 2022.
