Christopher Nolan’s film "The Odyssey" has strongly contributed to Imax’s box office success, bolstering investor confidence that the company will achieve record ticket sales in 2026. Following a recent report, shares of Imax rose over 8% after the company reaffirmed its forecast of $1.4 billion in global box office revenue for the year. Concerns had emerged when Netflix’s adaptation of "Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew" was postponed to February 2027, leading analysts to worry about Imax meeting its sales projections.
In its opening weekend, "The Odyssey" garnered $52 million globally, with Imax theaters accounting for about 20% of that revenue despite representing less than 1% of total screens. The film’s performance surpassed that of Nolan’s previous release, "Oppenheimer," which collected over $190 million in Imax. Following its debut, "The Odyssey" continued to perform well, generating an additional $11 million on Monday and another $10.6 million on Tuesday, marking Imax’s best Tuesday figures to date, according to CEO Rich Gelfond.
Looking ahead, Imax has several anticipated releases, including Sony and Marvel’s "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," "Resident Evil," and "Dune: Part Three," among others. The company also reported a significant expansion, installing 38 new Imax systems globally in the second quarter, the highest number for that period in a decade. The expected total installations by the end of 2026 are projected to be between 160 and 175. Gelfond emphasized Imax’s ongoing growth and innovation in enhancing value for creators, studios, and audiences alike.
