The Rise Of The Stay At Home Man (Boyfriend Or Husband)

An analysis by Indeed Hiring Lab reveals that women now occupy a greater number of payroll jobs than men in the U.S. for only the third time in history. This notable shift occurred between February 2025 and February 2026, during which women gained 298,000 jobs while men lost 142,000. Male labor force participation has declined significantly, reaching its lowest levels since 1948, excluding the pandemic period. Currently, one in three prime-age and younger men are neither employed nor seeking work.

The trend of men opting to stay home has transitioned from a social stigma to an emerging economic phenomenon. This shift is impacting societal expectations around gender roles, as evidenced by an increase in stay-at-home fathers, which now represent approximately 7% of fathers with children under 18.

Supporters of this trend argue that it reflects positive outcomes for families. Benefits include reduced pressure on young men to conform to traditional roles, increased freedom to pursue personal interests, improved father-child relationships, and more opportunities for women to ascend into leadership roles. Furthermore, as fatherhood becomes more normalized among stay-at-home arrangements, societal attitudes toward men in these roles are expected to evolve, leading to less stigma and greater acceptance.

Despite this progress, challenges remain. While the share of stay-at-home dads who cite caregiving as their primary reason for staying home has increased from 4% to 23% in 30 years, many still find themselves in these roles due to illness, disability, or economic circumstances.

In families with children, two-thirds have both parents employed, while dual-unemployed households are exceedingly rare at 2.6%.
