Private banks drive Nifty Bank up 0.47%; PSU lenders retain long-term lead | Markets News

The Nifty Bank index experienced a slight increase of 0.47% on Wednesday, finishing the day at 57,783.75, with a total trading volume of ₹5,301.4 crore. This performance outperformed the benchmark Nifty 50, which declined by 0.5% to close at 24,207.75.

Large banks were the primary contributors to this uptick. Kotak Mahindra Bank led the index with a notable rise of 3.76%, closing at ₹416.7. Axis Bank followed with a gain of 1.62%, while State Bank of India added 0.38%. HDFC Bank saw a slight decrease of 0.04%. Notably, public-sector banks also reported moderate gains, with Canara Bank increasing by 0.51% and Union Bank by 0.29%. In contrast, AU Bank and IndusInd Bank experienced declines of 1.34% and 1.08%, respectively.

On a broader spectrum, the NSE Nifty Private Bank index rose by 1%, surpassing the Nifty PSU Bank index, which recorded a 0.8% gain. Examination of long-term performance reveals a significant divergence: over the past year, Federal Bank and AU Bank achieved remarkable increases of 79.41% and 49.41%, while HDFC Bank experienced a decline of 25.29%. Public-sector banks have shown stronger long-term performance overall, with the PSU Bank index having risen by 26.6% in the last year, compared to a modest increase of 5.3% for private banks.

Key points:

  • Why this story matters: It highlights the contrasting performances of public and private sector banks, indicating market trends and investor confidence.
  • Key takeaway: Despite short-term gains in large private banks, public-sector banks have demonstrated superior long-term performance.
  • Opposing viewpoint: While the Nifty Bank index showed gains, the overall decline in the benchmark Nifty 50 raises concerns about market stability.
