Gap Q2 2026 earnings

Gap has appointed Michael Francis as the new CEO of its Old Navy brand, effective November 2, 2023. Francis, who previously served as chief customer officer since May, will succeed Haio Barbeito, who has held the CEO position since 2022 and will shift to an advisory role. Gap’s CEO Richard Dickson characterized this transition as "planned and thoughtful" to enhance Old Navy’s performance.

Despite a decline in Old Navy’s net sales, which fell 4% year-over-year to $2.1 billion in the fiscal second quarter, Dickson expressed optimism about the brand’s future, attributing recent struggles to ineffective summer marketing strategies. In the same quarter, Gap’s overall sales dipped slightly to $3.65 billion, with a 1% decline in comparable sales affecting their overall performance. As a response to these challenges, the company has narrowed its full-year net sales growth outlook.

Gap’s other brands showed a mix of results during the same period. The Gap brand experienced substantial growth, with comparable sales increasing by 10%, while Banana Republic reported a modest increase of 3%. Conversely, Athleta faced difficulties, posting a 12% decline in comparable sales.

Moving forward, Francis emphasized a commitment to deepening customer engagement and improving brand relevance. Meanwhile, Dickson pointed out the importance of disciplined execution to achieve sustainable growth, noting that the consumer market remains strong albeit selective.

Why this story matters: This leadership change reflects Gap’s strategic efforts to revitalize a key brand amid declining sales figures.

Key takeaway: Gap is focusing on refining customer experience and brand relevance to stimulate growth in Old Navy.

Opposing viewpoint: Some analysts might argue that leadership changes alone may not address the underlying issues affecting Old Navy’s performance.
