Morgan Stanley finds bigger story in SpaceX’s $100 billion bet

SpaceX has experienced significant volatility since its public offering on June 12, 2026, peaking at $225.64 before dropping to $137.95, which is close to its initial price. Despite this fluctuation, CEO Elon Musk continues to pursue ambitious projects, including a planned $100 billion Starbase complex in southern Louisiana. This facility is expected to be the largest launch site for SpaceX, featuring up to 10 launch pads, propellant production, energy generation, and housing for employees.

Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas views this expansion as an opportunity that investors should not overlook. Scheduled construction is set to begin in 2027, with the aim of launching the first missions by 2029. The facility’s scale could significantly enhance SpaceX’s launch capacity, transitioning its Starship project from testing to commercial operations.

Jonas maintains an Overweight rating for SpaceX, projecting a price target of $300, which suggests a 117% upside based on current trading levels. He argues that investors underestimate SpaceX’s ambitions and the number of launches anticipated from the Louisiana site. The firm estimates nearly 5,800 Starship launches annually by 2040, suggesting that SpaceX’s plans involve much more than just additional launch facilities.

However, Morgan Stanley notes that the current stock price may not fully capture the company’s potential in the emerging orbital computing market. There is skepticism regarding whether consumer connectivity could absorb this capacity, implying that future growth relies heavily on advancements in orbital computing.

To succeed, SpaceX must achieve significant improvements in Starship’s reuse capabilities, increase launch frequency, and secure premium pricing for computing services. Additionally, financing remains a crucial concern as the ambitious expansion plan is not self-funded.

Why this story matters:

  • The future of space exploration and commercial launches hinges on SpaceX’s ability to execute its ambitious projects.

Key takeaway:

  • Significant growth opportunities exist for SpaceX, but they come with considerable execution and financial risks.

Opposing viewpoint:

  • Some analysts caution that the current stock valuation may not be justified given the substantial risks and the need for rapid advancements in technology and market demand.
