AI Adoption and Buybacks Fuel Long-Term Growth Case

Workday (NASDAQ: WDAY) has emerged as a resilient player in the SaaS sector amid concerns known as the "SaaS-pocalypse." Recent earnings indicate that artificial intelligence (AI) is not a threat to its business but a significant driver of growth. Contrary to fears that businesses might create their own HR automation tools, many companies are increasingly opting for Workday’s offerings, highlighting a shift from traditional operations to advanced AI capabilities.

In the second quarter, Workday reported a revenue increase of 12.8%, reaching $2.65 billion, bolstered by a 13.9% growth in subscriptions. Notably, AI accounted for 25% of new contract value, with the number of clients using at least one AI-enhanced product rising by 35%. The company also demonstrated strong performance in margin growth, with adjusted operating income margins increasing by 210 basis points, leading to earnings per share of $2.75—20% higher than the previous year.

Workday has been proactive in returning capital to shareholders, buying back approximately $1.33 billion in shares, which reduced the share count by about 8.8% year-over-year. Analysts express a cautiously optimistic view of Workday, with guidance for future quarters above consensus expectations, largely supported by new partnerships with major players like Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services.

Despite a promising growth outlook, initial analyst reactions have limited the near-term price targets for Workday shares to around $220. Long-term forecasts suggest potential significant growth, with predictions that the stock could exceed $1,000 in the coming years, driven by strong earnings growth and institutional investment.
