RKLB Stock Falls as Neutron Rocket Delay Breaks Key Support

Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) faced significant investor disappointment following its announcement on October 14 that the inaugural launch of its Neutron rocket has been postponed from the fourth quarter of 2026 to 2027. The announcement triggered a sharp decline in share prices, which fell nearly 7% to close at $55.25 on October 15 after intraday losses of up to 16%.

The Neutron rocket is critical for Rocket Lab’s long-term ambitions, as it would enable the company to enter the lucrative medium-lift market, thereby augmenting its existing leadership in small-lift launches through the Electron rocket. The delay in Neutron’s launch was attributed to manufacturing defects found in the propellant dome of the rocket’s first-stage tank. Although Rocket Lab has indicated that it has resolved the issue, this marks yet another setback in a series of delays that have plagued the Neutron project since its announcement in early 2021. Each postponement raises questions about the company’s operational execution and further elongates its timeline to cash-flow positivity and profitability.

On the technical front, the stock’s plunge below the key support level of $60 has shifted market sentiment toward a more bearish outlook. Following the news, some analysts reduced their price targets while maintaining an overall positive view. For instance, KeyCorp lowered its target from $135 to $100, yet still assigned an Overweight rating. Conversely, Weiss Ratings reiterated a Sell rating, suggesting skepticism about Rocket Lab’s long-term valuation.

Despite the challenges, Rocket Lab still reports a robust backlog of $2.36 billion and a successful Electron business, underscoring a nuanced long-term perspective amid short-term setbacks.

Why this story matters:

  • The delays affect investor confidence and impact Rocket Lab’s trajectory towards profitability.

Key takeaway:

  • Neutron’s launch postponement highlights ongoing challenges in Rocket Lab’s manufacturing and execution capabilities.

Opposing viewpoint:

  • Some analysts maintain a positive outlook on Rocket Lab’s future potential despite the recent setbacks.
