Nearly 6 million coffee makers recalled as cracked glass poses burn risk

Nearly 6 million coffee makers are being recalled due to concerns that their glass carafes could shatter during use, significantly raising the risk of burn injuries. The recall involves approximately 5.9 million Bodum French press coffee makers, specifically those with 8-cup and 12-cup replaceable glass carafes.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) noted that the glass carafes may break if they are damaged or cracked, particularly if stirred with metal utensils. The Bodum logo is typically found on the frame and inner lid, with the name also engraved on the glass carafes.

Bodum USA announced the recall on October 29, reporting that they have received 70 incidents of glass breakage, with 48 cases resulting in burns to consumers. The company emphasized that while the overall incidence of breakage is low given the extensive distribution of these products over decades, the recall aims to promote the safe usage of their French Press Coffee Makers.

Consumers are advised to cease using metal utensils with the glass carafes and to contact Bodum for a complimentary plastic stirring spoon and a warning label.

The coffee makers were sold at major retailers, such as Target and Walmart, as well as online through platforms like Amazon, from 1974 until October 2023, at prices ranging from $15 to $65.

– Why this story matters: The recall addresses safety concerns regarding consumer products that could lead to injuries.
– Key takeaway: Consumers should stop using metal utensils with these coffee makers and seek alternative stirring options from Bodum.
– Opposing viewpoint: Bodum maintains that incident rates of carafe breakage are low, suggesting that risks may be overstated.
