AI Search Is Here — But Google Still Matters. Plan for Both.

Business leaders are increasingly questioning whether AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT are diverting users from traditional search engines, particularly Google. Recent data from Similarweb highlights a significant overlap between visitors of these platforms. In September, 93.7% of users visiting ChatGPT.com also accessed Google.com, while 14.1% of Google users visited ChatGPT.com.

This overlap, however, does not imply that users are switching from one platform to another in a sequential manner. The data merely reflects simultaneous visits and lacks insights on user behavior, such as which platform was used first or how searches influence purchasing decisions. Thus, businesses should view this data as indicative of channel overlap instead of channel replacement.

Marketers have historically relied on distinct channels for customer discovery, but the emergence of AI tools complicates this model. A user may use an AI assistant, subsequently search on Google, and visit a company’s website, making it difficult to accurately trace their journey. Relying solely on last-click attribution to measure marketing effectiveness can lead to misinterpretations of where customer engagement originates.

Google’s recent implementation of AI performance reports aims to provide clearer insights into user interactions, yet it doesn’t account for data from other AI platforms like ChatGPT. Companies should not treat AI and Google as competing channels; instead, they should ensure their branding is visible and credible across both, while monitoring engagement metrics rigorously.

To develop a cohesive marketing strategy, businesses are encouraged to assess all touchpoints in the customer journey rather than creating isolated metrics for each platform. Understanding how users utilize both AI and traditional search engines will be key in optimizing marketing efforts and improving brand visibility.

Bold Points:

  • Why this story matters: Highlights the evolving landscape of customer discovery in digital marketing, emphasizing the need for businesses to adapt strategies.

  • Key takeaway: Companies should view AI and traditional search as complementary rather than competitive channels for customer engagement.

  • Opposing viewpoint: Some may argue that AI tools are directly replacing traditional search engines, leading to diminished organic traffic for platforms like Google.
