Chemical tank implosion in Washington state kills one worker and leaves nine missing

A substantial chemical tank containing nearly one million gallons of a highly corrosive liquid imploded at Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. in Longview, Washington, on Tuesday, resulting in one confirmed death and leaving nine workers unaccounted for. The incident also injured nine people, some critically, including a firefighter responding to the scene.

Cowlitz Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein announced that recovery efforts are underway, with the focus now on stabilizing the collapsed tank, which still contains about 90,000 gallons of the corrosive liquid known as “white liquor.” Emergency responders plan to resume stabilizing efforts on Wednesday morning, working in daylight hours due to risks associated with the caustic liquid.

Local community members held a vigil to pray for those affected, highlighting the emotional turmoil experienced by families of missing workers. Reports indicated that some employees still had not been contacted regarding the incident.

The Nippon Dynawave facility, an essential part of the Longview community since its establishment in 1953, employs approximately 1,000 individuals and plays a significant role in local manufacturing, producing material for various paper products. Concerns about potential environmental impacts are also being discussed, as the chemical spill has affected nearby drainage systems.

While the exact cause of the tank’s implosion remains under investigation, previous safety complaints against the company have surfaced, including minor violations cited by the Washington Department of Labor and Industries.

Local officials, including Gov. Bob Ferguson and U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, have expressed their commitment to finding answers for the community.
