Disney names CTO for the first time as media giant expands tech push

Disney is expanding its technology leadership through the appointment of Karandeep Anand as senior executive vice president and chief technology officer, effective October 2. Anand, who previously served as CEO of Character.AI, will report directly to CEO Josh D’Amaro. This newly established position aims to enhance Disney’s technological capabilities across various sectors, including enterprise technology, infrastructure, data management, and artificial intelligence.

D’Amaro’s strategy emphasizes the integration of technology to advance Disney’s core values of storytelling and creativity while seeking operational efficiency across the organization. The hiring of Anand aligns with D’Amaro’s vision to bolster Disney’s presence in technology, particularly as the company navigates growth in its streaming services and theme parks. Anand’s background in consumer technology and AI is seen as a significant asset in this endeavor.

In addition to Anand, Disney is recruiting members from Character.AI’s technical team, emphasizing a commitment to innovation and user safety in AI applications. Anand’s leadership at Character.AI was marked by substantial growth and engagement, despite previous tensions between Disney and Character.AI regarding copyright issues. Disney has since indicated an interest in developing a free, ad-supported tier for Disney+, aiming to attract a broader audience.

Furthermore, amendments to Disney’s streaming services are anticipated, establishing a more cohesive “integrated ecosystem” that combines streaming with consumer products and experiences from Disney parks.
