China’s first AI-generated film to get a theatrical release flops at the box office

China’s venture into AI-generated cinema faced a setback with the release of "Sanxingdui: Future Past," the country’s first fully AI-generated feature film. The sci-fi thriller, produced by Bona Film Group, follows an archaeologist on a quest to save a future world controlled by artificial intelligence. Despite a production budget of $1.5 million, the film earned only about $180,000 at the box office, signaling a poor reception among audiences, as reported by ticketing service Maoyan.

Bona Film Group’s Chief Operating Officer, Jiang Defu, expressed that while the film’s performance was disappointing, it represented a significant trial in the evolving landscape of AI in cinema. He noted the film’s role as a pioneer in obtaining theatrical release approval and being tested by the audience.

Social media reactions have been varied, with some viewers expressing disappointment, while others praised the low-cost advantages of AI films. The burgeoning trend in China’s microdrama sector has seen over 95% of short narratives being AI-generated, leading to reduced production costs. However, this success in shorter formats does not translate to a desire for full-length AI features, as experts suggest.

Stanley Rosen, a professor at the University of Southern California, indicated a general skepticism among the public regarding AI in major film productions. He mentioned that unless AI-generated films can achieve comparable quality to well-received blockbusters, they may only thrive on streaming platforms rather than traditional theaters. The financial outcome of "Sanxingdui: Future Past" may prompt other creators to reconsider their approach to AI in filmmaking.

– Why this story matters: The performance of AI-generated films could influence future investments and trends in the film industry.
– Key takeaway: Audience skepticism remains high for AI-generated feature films despite their acceptance in shorter formats.
– Opposing viewpoint: Some believe that AI can offer cost-effective storytelling opportunities in film production.
