Accenture combats AI refuseniks by linking promotions to log-ins

Accenture has implemented a new policy that incorporates monitoring the use of its AI tools among employees as part of the criteria for promotion to leadership roles. As the Dublin-based consulting firm seeks to encourage the adoption of artificial intelligence, it has informed associate directors and senior managers that “regular adoption” of these technologies will be essential for advancement.

In recent communications, the company indicated that data regarding weekly log-ins to AI tools will inform discussions about talent during this summer’s promotion cycle. Accenture claims to have trained over 550,000 employees in generative AI, with tools such as AI Refinery, designed to transform raw AI technology into business solutions, and SynOps, an innovative operating engine aimed at optimizing data and digital technology integration within organizations.

The initiative highlights the struggle consulting firms face in convincing senior personnel to embrace AI, as many are more resistant to change than their junior counterparts. Some executives described the challenge as one of “chivvying” reluctant senior staff, some of whom prefer established methods over emerging technologies. Accenture has adopted a “carrot and stick” approach to foster adoption among its leadership teams.

Notably, employees in 12 European countries and those involved in U.S. federal contracts are exempt from this requirement. While Accenture aims to position itself as a leader in AI, it is also navigating challenges, including a 42% drop in share price over the past year, leading to a market value of approximately $137 billion.

Accenture’s ongoing reorganization seeks to unify various business units under a new division titled “Reinvention Services.” The firm also acquired the London-based AI startup Faculty to enhance its capabilities in helping clients adopt AI strategies.
