Alibaba has introduced its latest artificial intelligence chip, the Zhenwu M890, which boasts performance three times greater than its predecessor, the Zhenwu 810E. This advancement adds to China’s domestic AI chip offerings as Nvidia faces challenges in entering the market due to U.S. export restrictions. The new chip features 144 GB of GPU memory and an interchip bandwidth of 800 GB per second.
According to Alibaba, it has delivered 560,000 Zhenwu units to over 400 customers across various industries. The M890 strengthens Alibaba and its chip subsidiary T-Head’s position in China’s competitive AI processor market, which includes rivals such as Huawei and Cambricon. Analyst Myron Xie from SemiAnalysis observed that while Alibaba’s chips are gaining traction, their specifications still fall short compared to major Western competitors, and critical performance metrics remain undisclosed.
