American Airlines flight attendants to picket as frustrations grow

Flight attendants from American Airlines staged a picket outside the company’s headquarters on Thursday, calling for leadership changes amid concerns over profitability and operational delays that have left the airline lagging behind competitors such as Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. The protest, organized by the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, marked the first vote of no confidence against CEO Robert Isom.

In a video message to staff prior to the protest, Isom highlighted expected enhancements for the airline, including increased profits and improved schedules for 2026. He emphasized his commitment to collaboration with employees, despite the mounting pressure from unions representing pilots, flight attendants, and mechanics. These groups have voiced significant dissatisfaction about operational reliability and financial performance.

American Airlines has recently initiated a significant overhaul aimed at reviving profitability through investments in modern airplane cabins and expanded airport facilities. The airline forecasts a substantial increase in revenue and adjusted earnings per share, projecting figures as high as $2.70, compared to an adjusted 36 cents last year. Nevertheless, American Airlines ranked eighth in punctuality with a 73.7% on-time rate as of November, highlighting the challenges still faced in operational performance.

Flight attendants expressed frustrations regarding issues such as inadequate support during operational crises, including major winter storm disruptions. They contend that the current leadership is jeopardizing their careers, urging the company to implement accountability and demonstrable changes to restore competitiveness.

Isom, aiming to strengthen support among staff and management, recently addressed around 6,000 managers at Globe Life Field, emphasizing a shared responsibility to enhance profitability as the airline approaches its centennial.
