Apple beats revenue expectations in first earnings report under new CEO John Ternus

Apple’s CEO John Ternus has navigated an initial challenge since succeeding Tim Cook in September, delivering the company’s first earnings report under his leadership. Apple exceeded revenue expectations, reporting $114.48 billion, surpassing the anticipated $113.39 billion and marking a 12% increase from the previous year’s $102.5 billion. However, the company fell short in iPad sales, a reflection of ongoing supply chain issues, including a global shortage of memory chips that prompted price hikes for Macs and iPads.

iPhone sales particularly caught Wall Street’s attention, with revenue reaching $57.58 billion, exceeding the forecast of $56.54 billion. This figure partially included eight days of sales for the new iPhone 18 Pro, which has contributed to a significant upgrade cycle driven by both the iPhone 17 and 18 models. Dan Ives, a partner at Yorkville Ives & Co, emphasized that the stronger-than-expected iPhone performance was bolstered by demand from China.

Shares of Apple remained relatively stable after the earnings announcement. Investors are anticipating the financial details for the new iPhone Duo, priced nearly at $2,000, which launched after the earnings period. Although the device generated substantial excitement, reports of quality issues, such as cracks near the hinge, prompted Apple to commit to replacing affected units.

Ternus highlighted the ambitious product lineup as a pivotal point for Apple, mentioning challenges in predicting supply availability for the Duo. Analysts express caution regarding Apple’s valuation, noting a premium of 36 times expected earnings amid modest growth projections in comparison to other tech companies. Apple’s ongoing supply chain constraints stem from heightened demand for advanced chip technology, further complicated by competition from investments in AI infrastructure.

Key Points:

  • Why this story matters: Apple’s performance under new leadership signals strategic responses to market challenges and evolving consumer demand.
  • Key takeaway: While Apple exceeded revenue expectations, supply chain issues and product quality concerns remain critical challenges.
  • Opposing viewpoint: Analysts argue that Apple’s high valuation is not supported by projected slow growth compared to other technology firms.
