As Microsoft seeks to be AI’s center of gravity, CEO Satya Nadella makes the case in San Francisco

Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella unveiled a transformative vision for the company during his keynote at the Build conference in San Francisco, emphasizing the emergence of agentic AI. This concept represents a shift in technological capabilities that positions Microsoft at the forefront of the AI landscape.

Since partnering with OpenAI in 2019, Microsoft has been navigating an increasingly competitive sector dominated by companies such as Google, Meta, and Anthropic. With a reinvigorated focus on AI initiatives, the company aims to rekindle excitement around its offerings, underscored by the strategic choice to host the conference in San Francisco for the first time since 2016.

Nadella characterized the era of agentic AI as a new paradigm where agents can reason continuously, dynamically generate and execute code, and operate across various devices and networks. Key announcements included “Project Solara,” a platform designed for diverse devices, and the launch of new AI models covering image processing, coding, and reasoning.

The keynote also highlighted the integration of the open-source personal AI tool OpenClaw into Windows, as well as major upgrades to infrastructure tailored for AI workloads, featuring collaboration with Nvidia. Nadella announced plans for a Copilot super app, debuting this summer, which will integrate multiple functionalities, including chat and coding, enhancing user interaction in platforms like Microsoft Teams and Outlook.

Facing stiff competition and challenges, Microsoft is actively addressing its vulnerabilities, including training Copilot on its servers and deploying proprietary chips. Nadella articulated a vision that moves from a cloud-native framework to an "agent-native stack," advocating for technology to enhance human potential rather than diminish it.
