Bank of America just drew a line in the sand for the stock market

Professional investors are increasingly focused on rising Treasury yields as a potential threat to the ongoing equity rally. The latest Global Fund Manager Survey conducted by Bank of America highlights that a 10-year Treasury yield reaching 5.9% would likely prompt a significant shift of investor capital from stocks to bonds.

The survey, which gathered insights from over 300 investment professionals, noted that the current yield is approximately 4.64%, leaving a notable gap before this critical threshold is met. As yields rise, the present value of future corporate earnings diminishes, putting downward pressure on stock prices. The survey indicates that managers are comfortable maintaining their equity positions at current yield levels, as they do not anticipate any immediate catalysts—a significant inflation surprise or fiscal shock—that would drive yields sharply upwards.

A majority of survey respondents, 76%, expect the Federal Reserve to maintain current interest rates at its upcoming meeting, which further alleviates concern about swift yield increases. Conversely, technology allocations among managers have hit their highest levels since August 2020, largely fueled by enthusiasm for artificial intelligence advancements. However, the same survey reveals lower allocations in consumer discretionary sectors, reminiscent of market conditions from 2008.

In terms of risk, managers cited two primary concerns: a sharply rising yield environment and a potential bubble in AI-related investments. The interconnected nature of these risks could pose a significant challenge, particularly if rapid sell-offs in high-flying sectors like technology trigger unrest in bond markets as well.

Investors should view the 5.9% yield marker as a reference point for understanding potential shifts in market dynamics and positioning among major institutional investors.
