Bob Chapek on Disney Bob Iger power battle: Raised concerns weekly

Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek revealed on Monday that he expressed concerns about then-Executive Chairman Bob Iger to the company’s board on a regular basis during his tenure. Chapek, who served as CEO from 2020 until his ousting, shared insights from his new memoir, "Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth," in an interview with CNBC’s "Squawk Box."

Chapek, who previously led Disney’s theme park and experiences division, was appointed CEO shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the closure of theaters and amusement parks worldwide. During this challenging period, Iger remained involved with Disney to oversee its content initiatives, including the streaming service Disney+.

As Chapek navigated the difficulties of his new role, he alleged that Iger began to reassert control over the company, leading to a power struggle that was detailed in a CNBC article earlier this year. Chapek confronted the board about Iger’s behavior, reporting that he heard multiple accounts of Iger disparaging him during private meetings. However, board members reassured him that Iger’s influence would diminish over time. Despite these assurances, Chapek was removed from his position nearly three years after his appointment, with Iger returning to lead the company until March 2026.

In reflecting on his experience, Chapek stated that Iger’s actions during his tenure were unexpected and counterproductive, expressing disappointment that Iger did not act as a supportive steward of his new role.

Key Points:

  • Why this story matters: Highlights internal conflicts at a major corporation and raises questions about leadership dynamics in times of crisis.
  • Key takeaway: Chapek’s memoir reveals the complexities of his leadership experience and the challenges of navigating corporate politics.
  • Opposing viewpoint: Iger’s supporters may argue that his extensive experience was essential for steering Disney through a tumultuous period.
