Businesses are wasting over $800 billion on admin that could be done by AI: study

A study reveals that U.S. businesses are losing more than $818 billion annually due to time wasted on administrative tasks that could be automated. Research conducted among 3,000 American office workers indicates that employees engaged in such tasks lose an average of over five and a half hours each week to manual work. At an average salary of $115,779 per worker, this equates to an estimated daily loss of $3 billion.

The study identifies email-related tasks as the biggest time drain, with 34% of respondents citing email drafting as their primary concern. Other significant tasks include reading emails (31%), updating spreadsheets (19%), and preparing reports (14%). Additionally, 17% of workers specified that researching information and analyzing data also consume considerable time.

Overwhelmed by the volume of administrative responsibilities, 46% of participants reported feeling stressed, and half considered leaving their jobs because of the burden. While 43% indicated they utilize AI tools for assistance, many believe that more support would enhance their productivity. Despite the availability of automation, 33% of respondents rarely use such tools.

Rich Hollingsworth, CEO of a leading email assistant company, emphasized that the cumulative impact of tedious tasks can severely affect worker morale and productivity. As email volume increases—most workers receiving an average of 48 emails daily—there is a clear imperative for businesses to adopt more robust automation solutions.

The study underscores the need for organizations to reassess administrative practices to improve employee satisfaction and operational efficiency.
