CoreWeave bond yield tops 16% as AI credit stress rises

Debt markets are signaling caution for builders of AI data centers, with rising interest rates and potential lending restrictions looming. Christopher Wood, Jefferies’ global head of equity strategy, suggested that the situation could lead to a reduction in available credit.

The political landscape has introduced new uncertainties, particularly under Democratic governors in key states, which raises concerns about future data center projects. Coreweave, a prominent player in the sector, is experiencing significant bond yield increases, with its 2032 bond now yielding over 16%. Additionally, the company’s five-year credit default swaps (CDS) have surged, indicating heightened risk perceptions among investors.

Even well-established companies like Nvidia, Broadcom, and Amazon are facing increased CDS rates, signaling a demand for greater compensation to protect against potential defaults. Though their CDS levels remain relatively low, this upward trend could lead to higher financing costs in the future.

The markets anticipate possible delays or cancellations in data center spending due to incoming Democratic administrations in states like Texas, Georgia, and Ohio, which account for a substantial portion of the planned capacity. Reports from Goldman Sachs indicate that moratoriums could affect nearly 45% of U.S. data center capacity, predominantly in Texas, where new legislation is sought to protect community interests.

Despite these challenges, the AI bond market is still active, with Goldman estimating that $440 billion in hyperscaler debt issuance is forecasted for next year, complemented by project-level issuance. However, analysts caution that risks are mounting, particularly regarding cash flow issues among hyperscalers. Projected capital expenditure may soon face constraints if the anticipated growth in AI infrastructure does not materialize.
