Cosm rides premium moviegoing wave with more immersive screenings

Cosm, an immersive entertainment technology company, is reimagining premium large format (PLF) theatrical viewing. Initially known for programming planetariums, Cosm, which derives its name from "cosmos" and "colosseum," has transitioned to creating large domed screens that provide an immersive experience for film and sports fans alike. The company has launched four theaters since 2024 in Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, and Detroit, with plans for a Cleveland hub to open in 2027. These venues have attracted significant attention for live sports screenings in a unique arena-like environment, resulting in sold-out shows.

In an effort to broaden its audience, Cosm has partnered with Hollywood studios like Warner Bros. and Universal. This collaboration has introduced classics such as "The Matrix," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone," and "Shrek," to their theaters, thereby enhancing their content library and allowing for a richer cinematic experience. Ticket prices range from $18 for matinees to around $70 for premium experiences, not including concessions or themed items.

Cosm has also attracted investment from major players, including a recent $100 million infusion from Sony, which has a minority stake in the company. Sony plans to leverage this partnership for further expansion in innovative cinema experiences. The innovative dome setup, with a diameter of 87 feet in current theaters and plans for a larger 100-foot dome in Cleveland, allows for a multi-sensory viewing experience that fills the viewer’s periphery.

As the cinema landscape evolves post-pandemic, Cosm is positioning itself in the growing market of premium experiences, catering to a younger demographic enthusiastic about unique and immersive entertainment.
