Fans are fuming after World Cup tickets they bought through resale sites fall through

ATLANTA — Bina Ramroop was devastated when she learned that the World Cup tickets she purchased for her grandson’s 13th birthday were invalid. Despite buying the tickets for $485 each through StubHub months in advance, she found herself outside Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium during the match between Spain and Cape Verde, unable to retrieve her tickets due to a transfer issue between StubHub and FIFA’s ticketing app. After hours of back-and-forth conversations, she was ultimately offered a refund, which she reluctantly accepted.

Her experience reflects a broader pattern of ticketing issues reported by numerous fans during the World Cup, with many expressing frustration over canceled orders and logistical problems. Although StubHub has encountered a majority of complaints, fans using other resale sites such as SeatGeek and Vivid Seats have also faced similar challenges. Technical glitches and speculative ticket sales—where sellers list tickets not yet owned—are suspected causes.

FIFA has recommended that fans purchase tickets directly through its official resale marketplace, which includes a 30% surcharge for buyers and sellers. However, many fans, including Ramroop, chose platforms like StubHub for their familiarity and often lower prices.

The disappointments are not isolated. Pape Ndaw experienced a similar letdown when his graduation gift for his son failed to arrive. Others, like Patrick O’Neil, managed to attend part of the match, but not without complications. Industry experts argue that the ticketing problems are not new, often surfacing at significant events, but the World Cup’s visibility has amplified these frustrations.

StubHub asserts that it holds sellers accountable for listing tickets they physically possess, emphasizing the need for assurance in ticket transactions.
