Genius Sports’ media surge shows shift beyond sportsbook data

Genius Sports is expanding its operations beyond traditional data provision for sportsbooks by leveraging real-time sports information to establish a rapidly growing media and advertising platform. The company reported notable financial results for the second quarter, with revenue from its betting technology segment rising 28% year-over-year to $117.4 million. Meanwhile, its media technology segment experienced a remarkable 193% increase in revenue, reaching $78.2 million. This surge is partly attributable to the acquisition of the sports and gaming media company Legend on May 1, with both the legacy Genius media business and Legend achieving organic growth of over 20%.

Historically, Genius Sports has focused on collecting and selling official data from sports leagues to sportsbooks, aiding them in setting odds and managing in-game betting. CEO Mark Locke emphasized that the company is now also monetizing this data through advertising, enhancing return on investments for brands and agencies. The company’s Moment Engine harnesses live sports data to enable advertisers to adjust their campaigns dynamically based on real-time events.

Recently, Genius added 174 new customers, including prominent names like McDonald’s and YouTube TV, and plans to introduce related products for NFL campaigns this season. The acquisition of Legend also brought approximately 118 million users into its audience, allowing Genius to sell advertising on its own platforms and lessen reliance on external resources. Overall revenue increased by 65% in the second quarter to $195.5 million, and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization rose by 54% to $52.6 million. Despite a reported net loss of $76.7 million—largely due to acquisition costs—the company updated its annual revenue forecast to between $1 billion and $1.03 billion.
