Govt skilling programmes struggle to produce workplace-ready talent: Report | Education News

Government skilling programs in India are facing challenges in effectively transitioning participants into the workforce, according to findings from Gi Group Holding. The study, which surveyed 1,329 individuals—including 750 employers and 579 early-career professionals across 12 sectors and eight major cities—reveals that only 25% of trainees secured full-time positions at their training organizations, while 33% sought employment elsewhere using their training certificates.

Despite the initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana and the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, employers identified significant gaps in behavioral skills and practical exposure to contemporary tools. The report states that 47% of employers considered government-issued skilling certificates of little value in hiring decisions. The lack of soft skills emerged as a primary barrier to employment, with 38% of candidates noting this deficiency, followed by limited experience with current equipment (34%) and wage discrepancies (13%).

Furthermore, employers showed a preference for candidates demonstrating practical readiness over formal qualifications, with 76% prioritizing skills related to software proficiency and practical experience. Traditional academic credentials were deemed important by only 6%, as many employers favored certifications from private institutions, perceived to provide better training.

The disparity in readiness was notably pronounced between graduates from Tier 1 versus Tier 2 and Tier 3 institutions. Nearly half of lower-tier graduates expressed feelings of unpreparedness, while a significant percentage of employers no longer recognized degrees from these institutions as reliable indicators of capability. The trend indicates a growing expectation for individuals to take personal responsibility for skill enhancement, with 61% of employees asserting that maintaining their skills is primarily their responsibility.

Why this story matters:

  • Highlighting the disconnect between education and employment readiness informs policymakers and educators on urgent reforms needed in training programs.

Key takeaway:

  • Skill-based hiring is increasingly preferred over formal qualifications, underscoring the importance of practical experience in today’s job market.

Opposing viewpoint:

  • Some argue that government initiatives still play a crucial role in shaping workforce capabilities, and the issues observed may stem from implementation inefficiencies rather than the programs themselves.
