How Much Money Each Generation Is Spending on Fun, Hobbies

A study conducted by the Bank of America Institute has revealed notable differences in hobby spending across generational lines, highlighting a phenomenon termed “funflation.” Various polls indicate that more Americans now consider hobbies essential to their well-being compared to two decades ago, with a recent Gallup poll showcasing increased importance placed on recreational activities.

The study, which analyzed credit card data through a moving average to August 2026, found that overall hobby spending rose by 7.9% year-over-year, outpacing the growth of general transactions. This rise in spending indicates a willingness among consumers to invest more in entertainment and experiences, particularly post-pandemic.

Baby Boomers lead the way in hobby expenditure, spending over $200 monthly, closely followed by Generation X. In contrast, younger millennials and Generation Z spend significantly less, averaging around $140 and $100 per month, respectively. However, older millennials emerged as the highest spenders, investing nearly $220 monthly. This increase may be attributed to their expenditures on their children’s hobbies alongside their own.

Interestingly, many individuals are translating their hobbies into profitable ventures. During the pandemic, around 60% of Americans explored new hobbies, with nearly half subsequently transforming these interests into side hustles, as evidenced by a LendingTree survey. An example of this trend is Anna Hudick, who, after retiring from an engineering career, established a jewelry-making business and offers craft classes, emphasizing the fulfilling nature of creative pursuits for her clients.
