Kalshi adds 3 million new users as company capitalizes on World Cup

Kalshi, a prediction market platform, has seen a significant surge in trading activity during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, attracting 3 million new users. The company’s trading volume for World Cup-related contracts has exceeded $1.2 billion, marking a record for a single market. The market will officially close following the final match between Spain and Argentina.

Vijay Viswanathan, an associate dean at Northwestern University, emphasized football’s global reach, noting that it surpasses other sports in terms of audience and market size. To capitalize on this heightened interest, Kalshi has implemented various marketing strategies, including a partnership with ADI Predictstreet, co-branding advertisements in stadiums, and collaborations with high-profile figures in the soccer community, such as Luka Modric and Lionel Messi. CEO Tarek Mansour highlighted the importance of speed and creativity in their marketing approach, exemplified by a recent advertisement developed within 24 hours.

However, with increased visibility comes scrutiny. There’s an ongoing dispute regarding the regulatory oversight of prediction markets, as some states argue that they should be treated similarly to sports betting. Kalshi aligns with the federal government’s stance that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission is the appropriate regulatory body. Mansour has dismissed concerns about competition from gambling companies, while experts suggest that the company’s advertising strategies may influence public perception of prediction markets.

Looking ahead, Kalshi faces the challenge of converting its new user base into long-term traders. Trading volumes have noticeably declined on days without matches, raising questions about sustainability beyond the World Cup. Mansour expressed optimism that other global events will continue to create trading opportunities.
