McDonald's changes its discount strategy

McDonald’s has acknowledged past errors in its value offerings, particularly with the recent introduction of its Every Day Affordable Price (EDAP) menu, which failed to meet expectations. During a second-quarter earnings call, CFO Ian Borden highlighted that inconsistent execution at the restaurant level and low consumer awareness contributed to a decline in customer traffic. It was estimated that these issues accounted for two-thirds of the decline relative to the company’s forecasts.

In response, McDonald’s plans to pivot its marketing strategy, focusing on rewarding loyal customers with more personalized digital promotions and enhancing its pricier Extra Value Meals. Borden noted that while they saw improvement in value perception since last year, adjustments will continue to ensure they remain competitive without compromising quality.

This adjustment aligns McDonald’s with a broader industry trend, where several fast-food chains, including Wendy’s and Burger King, have shifted away from aggressive low-price advertising. Analyst Peter Saleh commented that deep discount strategies have not successfully driven traffic and have instead negatively impacted profit margins.

Looking forward, McDonald’s is set to moderate its discount offers, balancing price competitiveness with profitability. Key elements of their Extra Value Meals include a main item, drink, and side, with prices varying by location, and an emphasis on overall value rather than merely low prices.
