Millions of ladders recalled nationwide after numerous reports of head injuries, skull fractures

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of over 3.6 million Little Giant ladders due to safety concerns arising from the “Rapid Locks” mechanism, which is designed for height adjustment. The recall comes after 25 reports of the ladders unexpectedly retracting, resulting in injuries, including head trauma and skull fractures, along with other injuries such as joint fractures and lacerations.

Among the reported incidents, three involved serious head injuries, including traumatic brain injury and concussions. Overall, the company has documented a total of 39 malfunction reports related to the Rapid Locks system.

The recall impacts 11 different models of Little Giant ladders, which are priced between $100 and $1,000. In response, the company is issuing supplemental warning labels that instruct users to ensure the Rapid Locks are fully engaged before using the ladders. Consumers are also advised to stop using the ladders until they receive and apply the provided warning labels.

Little Giant is taking additional measures by sending repair kits to all known users affected by the Rapid Locks issue. These kits will include instructions on proper usage and maintenance for the locks, accessible through a QR code on the ladders.

The CPSC encourages consumers to regularly evaluate their ladders for functionality. If any lock is found to be defective, Little Giant will offer either a replacement ladder or a refund, with an option for a full refund for ladders purchased within the past year.
