SpaceX’s recovery ship brought back four astronauts to Earth after an eight-month mission

After a successful mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, alongside France’s Sophie Adenot and Russia’s Andrey Fedyaev, returned to Earth via a SpaceX capsule. Their splashdown occurred in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Los Angeles, marking the end of their extended separation from families.

The astronauts had set out in February to replace a previous crew that returned early due to an emergency medical evacuation involving retired NASA astronaut Mike Fincke. This incident marked NASA’s first medical evacuation in 65 years of human spaceflight. The returning crew expressed excitement about being back on Earth, with Meir noting the “mixed, swirling emotions” experienced during their time in orbit.

Upon their return, the astronauts quickly exited the capsule to celebrate aboard SpaceX’s recovery ship, looking forward to their journey to Houston. During their time on the ISS, Meir participated in four spacewalks, while Adenot took part in three, focusing on maintenance and upgrades for the long-standing facility. The crew also embraced lighter moments, hosting dance parties and culinary demonstrations, with Hathaway maintaining his distinctive mustache throughout the mission as a nod to his Navy background.

Currently, seven astronauts remain on the ISS, representing the U.S., Russia, and Canada, bringing the total number of visitors to the outpost to 298 from 26 countries since its inception in 2000.
