Walmart Inc. has taken precautionary measures by removing four bagged iceberg lettuce salad products sourced from Taylor Farms amid an expanding cyclosporiasis outbreak. Although the retailer confirmed no illnesses have been directly linked to these specific products, the decision to withdraw them follows notification from the supplier.
These salad items, available under Walmart’s Marketside brand, are sold in select locations. The removal reflects a broader trend where consumer confidence in purchasing leafy greens and berries has declined as warnings related to the outbreak have circulated. Produce sales are particularly crucial during the summer months when households engage in more outdoor activities and gatherings.
The recall originates from Taylor Farms’ products that were shipped from a farm in Mexico to 27 states. In response, the Mexican government is collaborating with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate the outbreak’s source, although they caution against assuming that the contamination occurred within Mexico. They emphasized that while tracing the product’s origin is essential, it does not confirm where the contamination took place.
As of now, cyclosporiasis has affected individuals across 34 states, with Michigan reporting the highest number of cases—over 5,000 as of mid-July. Symptoms of the disease, which results from a microscopic parasite, can vary and may take up to two weeks to manifest, complicating efforts to identify the source.
Taylor Farms has indicated that its other salad kits do not contain iceberg lettuce and it is actively cooperating with health authorities during the investigation. The FDA has warned that the recall may expand to include additional states.
