Record Q3 Earnings Show Gold’s $4,000 Floor Holds

Newmont Corporation (NYSE: NEM) announced record adjusted earnings for the third quarter of 2026, reporting an adjusted net income of $2.3 billion, translating to $2.20 per diluted share. The company’s revenue increased by 15% year-over-year to $6.36 billion, with adjusted EBITDA reaching $4 billion. Despite this success, the focus remains on gold prices, which have significantly decreased from their peaks in December 2025. October spot gold has fluctuated between $4,100 and $4,200 per troy ounce, falling short of Newmont’s projected $4,500 for 2026.

While rising interest rates and a stronger dollar would typically exert downward pressure on gold, the metal has demonstrated a resilience, hovering around $4,000 an ounce. This stability suggests consistent buyer interest, which is crucial for low-cost producers like Newmont, who maintain a healthy margin even at current gold prices.

The company reported production of 1.3 million attributable gold ounces and reaffirmed its full-year production guidance of 5.3 million ounces. Notably, Newmont’s all-in sustaining costs dropped to $1,454 per ounce, leading to an estimated margin of approximately $2,860 at the third quarter’s realized price. However, the company’s forecast for fourth quarter AISC is projected to rise to $1,900 per ounce due to various cost pressures.

Additionally, Newmont has generated $1.9 billion in free cash flow, returning the same amount to shareholders through buybacks and dividends. Their strong cash position is further supported by a recent update on the Red Chris Block Cave project, which targets double-digit returns even with gold prices well below current levels.

Important insights:

  • Why this story matters: Newmont’s performance and gold prices indicate the health of the gold mining sector and investor confidence in gold as a hedge against economic challenges.
  • Key takeaway: Despite falling gold prices, Newmont maintains strong financials with significant margins, cash flow, and strategic investments in expansion.
  • Opposing viewpoint: Analysts note that some mining stocks, including Newmont, may be less favorable investments compared to others, signaling a cautious outlook amidst fluctuating market conditions.
