Binance withdrawals spike as it returns online after $6.3B heist

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, experienced significant withdrawal activity from its users, amounting to $3.64 billion, or approximately 2.1% of its assets, following a major security breach. This breach, attributed to a North Korean hacking group, resulted in losses of around $6.3 billion. The platform resumed operations on Sunday, reporting that withdrawal activity was stabilizing, while deposits remained robust.

The high volume of withdrawals is seen as a critical indicator of customer trust in the exchange after the incident. Analysts noted that this theft is possibly the largest financial robbery recorded, reflecting a troubling trend in cryptocurrency thefts, with nearly $2.9 billion stolen across multiple incidents last year alone. Despite the crisis, Binance has managed to recover about 95% of the stolen assets by utilizing company funds to acquire replacement tokens.

To address the situation, Binance has implemented a phased withdrawal procedure, focusing on tokens based on their demand in the aftermath of the breach. The FBI confirmed that the hacking group involved was a state-sponsored North Korean unit, which reportedly converted some of the stolen assets into cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum.

Binance’s leadership has pledged to bear the financial ramifications of the theft, allocating significant portions from its Secure Asset Fund for Users to cover losses. The company has been actively collaborating with the wider crypto industry to identify and freeze stolen assets, with over $3 billion reportedly located.

Despite the severity of the breach, Binance maintains that customer funds remain safe and continues to reaffirm its commitment to financial security.
