Burger King refranchising plan targets local operators

In a significant move for the fast-food industry, Burger King is shifting towards a franchising model to drive its recovery in the U.S. market. One of the newest franchisees, Jeremy Kline, who began his career at Taco Bell, has acquired 16 locations in the Salt Lake City area as part of this transition. This marks an essential step for Burger King, which plans to sell around 200 of its company-operated restaurants to franchisees by the end of the year.

Since initiating its turnaround strategy in late 2022, Burger King has focused on improving marketing, enhancing food quality, and updating restaurant facilities. As a result, the chain recently surpassed Wendy’s to become the second-largest hamburger brand in the U.S. by system sales. This strategy is underpinned by the parent company, Restaurant Brands International, which purchased Burger King’s largest franchisee, Carrols Restaurant Group, for about $1 billion in 2024. This acquisition added over 1,000 locations to the company’s portfolio with plans to refranchise many of them back to smaller, local operators.

Burger King’s growth strategy emphasizes the significance of franchisee investment in community and operational excellence. The company prioritizes candidates who engage closely with the communities they serve, fostering accountability and enhancing customer experiences. This shift marks a departure from past practices where larger, private-equity-backed franchisees dominated the landscape.

As the turnaround gains momentum, Burger King reported 8.5% growth in domestic same-store sales, contrasting sharply with competitor McDonald’s, which experienced only 0.8% growth during the same period.

Why this story matters:

  • Indicates a significant shift in the fast-food industry’s franchising strategies.

Key takeaway:

  • Burger King’s transition to a predominantly franchise-operated model is crucial for its U.S. market revival.

Opposing viewpoint:

  • Critics may argue that reliance on smaller franchisees could pose risks amid current economic challenges, including high inflation and interest rates.
