Earnings Beat Hides Slowing Traffic as Turnaround Ends

Starbucks has announced its fiscal fourth-quarter results for 2026, marking the first report since CEO Brian Niccol stated that the company’s turnaround is complete. Niccol highlighted that the "Back to Starbucks" initiative has transitioned from a turnaround strategy into a growth plan.

In the fourth quarter, U.S. comparable sales rose by 7.7%, surpassing the management’s guidance of 6.5%. Non-GAAP earnings increased by 54% to 80 cents per share, exceeding the consensus forecast of 72 cents. The non-GAAP operating margin also expanded by approximately 450 basis points to 14%. However, shares dipped about 2% in after-hours trading due to revenue falling below expectations. Revenue dropped by 4.5% to $9.1 billion, compared to the anticipated $9.2 billion, a decrease attributed to structural changes in how the business operates, particularly after shifting its China retail operations into a licensed joint venture.

Despite the revenue decline, North American revenue saw a growth of 6% to $7.3 billion. The shift in comparable sales growth can be attributed to an increase in average customer spending rather than a rise in foot traffic, as transaction growth did not keep pace with ticket size. For the upcoming fiscal 2027, Starbucks forecasts North American comparable sales growth of approximately 4%, with non-GAAP earnings per share anticipated to range from $3.15 to $3.25.

While the company has demonstrated strong performance in several areas, analysts express cautious optimism regarding the sustainability of growth, particularly given the decline in transaction growth and the challenges in international markets.

Key Points:

  • Why this story matters: The results indicate Starbucks’ strategic shift from turnaround efforts to growth, highlighting financial health and operational changes.
  • Key takeaway: Despite robust comparable sales growth and earnings, revenue concerns related to structural changes raise questions about future performance.
  • Opposing viewpoint: Some analysts remain cautious, suggesting that sustainable growth could be challenging amid cooling transaction growth and international market difficulties.
