EDF and Enterprise Nation have initiated a sustainability program aimed at assisting small business owners in the UK, with support from NatWest and Square. The initiative will provide funding for five selected businesses to receive £5,000 grants for significant sustainability enhancements. Additionally, another five participants will be awarded electric vehicle (EV) chargers, including standard installation, courtesy of Pod.
To qualify for the program, businesses must be based in the UK, employ fewer than 50 staff members, and have operated for at least a year. Eligible businesses must possess either a rental or owned premises and have relevant registrations, such as a Companies House registration number or proof as a sole trader. Businesses undergoing insolvency processes are disqualified from participation. Furthermore, applicants must either own the business or have the business owner’s consent to apply, excluding employees of involved partner organizations or their relatives from eligibility.
Specific criteria must be met for those applying for the EV charger, including having dedicated off-street parking and potentially obtaining landlord permission in rental situations. The cash grant is taxable, and recipients are responsible for any tax liabilities.
Funds can be utilized for various sustainability upgrades, including equipment enhancements, solar installations, electric vehicle infrastructure, heat pumps, energy-efficient appliances, and improved insulation.
The application period opens on July 21, 2026, and closes at midnight on August 31, 2026. Applicants must demonstrate how the grant or charger would benefit their sustainability goals. Successful applications will be evaluated by a panel of judges.
