Southwest Airlines overhauls Rapid Rewards program

Southwest Airlines is set to overhaul its loyalty program in 2027, moving from its current two-tier structure to a three-level system. The changes aim to align the airline with broader industry standards and enhance revenue by rewarding frequent, high-spending travelers. The existing A-List and A-List Preferred statuses will be replaced with Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers.

Beginning January 1, 2027, A-List members will transition to Silver status, while A-List Preferred members will be promoted to Gold. Notably, a new Platinum tier will be introduced for the airline’s most engaged travelers. To earn Silver status, customers will now need 35,000 Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) or 25 qualifying flights, while Gold will require 65,000 TQPs or 50 flights. Platinum status necessitates 140,000 TQPs or 100 qualifying flights.

In addition, the airline is revamping its Companion Pass system, where eligible travelers can fly a companion for free. Starting in 2027, this benefit will be earned through specific TQP thresholds or qualifying flights. Furthermore, Southwest plans to implement new airport lounges named "Icon" in several U.S. cities, enhancing the travel experience for its members.

This strategic change is part of a broader trend in the airline industry, where carriers are raising status requirements and expanding offerings to create a more engaging loyalty experience. Southwest’s adjustments reflect an evolving focus on customer incentives and competitive advantages, aiming to attract and retain a loyal customer base.
