A recent analysis by workforce solutions provider Careerminds examined nearly 9,700 resumes and highlighted notable trends regarding the effectiveness of various skills in securing employment.
The findings reveal that candidates showcasing technical skills are markedly more successful compared to those emphasizing soft skills. Specifically, 20% of job-seekers with technical competencies secured employment, whereas only 14% of those prioritizing soft skills landed jobs. Individuals with technical expertise were found to be 42% more likely to be hired.
Among technical skills, proficiency in Tableau, a leading data visualization tool, proved to be the most effective, as over 25% of users reported successfully landing jobs. Other sought-after skills included data analysis, Python programming, and SQL.
Conversely, soft skills, which many candidates still include in their resumes, showed lower hiring rates. For instance, while communication skills were mentioned in 16.4% of resumes, only 15.3% of those candidates were hired. Soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, and customer service similarly underperformed.
Amanda Augustine, a career expert at Careerminds, emphasized that merely claiming proficiency in a skill is insufficient. Candidates must demonstrate practical applications of their abilities to enhance credibility. Notably, while only 3% of resumes referenced AI tools, those who did report AI-related skills were 1.4 times more likely to secure a job. Augustine advises that understanding relevant AI tools is essential for today’s workforce, even for those not specializing in AI.
