Strong Earnings, Steep Pullback, Key $320 Support Test

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) recently reported strong quarterly results, with revenue rising by 24% year-over-year to $119.8 billion. This extends the company’s double-digit growth streak to 12 consecutive quarters, bolstered by a remarkable 82% growth in Google Cloud, which generated $24.8 billion—significantly exceeding analysts’ expectations. Despite these positive financial indicators, Alphabet’s stock price fell by over 18% from its 52-week high, closing at $338.01.

Market analysts are examining the disconnect between Alphabet’s robust performance and its declining stock price. While the company’s earnings per share (EPS) reported at $9.11 included a substantial unrealized gain of $99 billion from stakes in Anthropic and SpaceX, operational earnings were much lower at $2.87 per share. This discrepancy has raised concerns among investors regarding the true valuation of the company.

The primary concern driving the stock’s retreat is Alphabet’s increased capital expenditures (CapEx), which reached $44.9 billion, double that of the previous year. Management has adjusted its full-year guidance to an even higher spending range of $195 billion to $205 billion. This escalated spending has been interpreted by the market as a potential risk, heightening fears around AI-related expenditures.

Nevertheless, there are reasons for optimism. Analysts have upgraded their consensus rating for GOOGL to "Buy," with an average price target of $419.86, suggesting a potential upside of nearly 26%. The company’s substantial backlog of $514 billion in future contracts may indicate strong demand, supporting the argument that Alphabet’s long-term growth potential remains intact.

The upcoming critical support level for the stock is around $320. A stable performance above this level could present a favorable entry point for long-term investors.

Why this story matters:

  • Alphabet’s financial health contrasts sharply with its stock price decline, highlighting market sentiment surrounding tech spending.

Key takeaway:

  • Despite record results and bullish analyst ratings, concerns over increased spending and market volatility pose risks for investors.

Opposing viewpoint:

  • Some analysts argue that the substantial backlog and ongoing growth in cloud services validate Alphabet’s expansion plans and long-term viability.
